Saturday Slush: 600 Words
This annual Authors Workshop Track event has proven so popular that we are expanding it to two sessions on Saturday so everyone gets a chance to be heard!
A moderator will read your work, up to 600 words, and professionals in the industry will give you valuable feedback on your writing. You can remain anonymous, or claim the response. This is a wonderful opportunity to tap into the wealth of experience from the amazing Guests who join us at JordanCon.
To organize and allow Guests an opportunity to prepare, submissions must be made prior to the event. Early birds will likely get on the roster to be read!
Guidelines:
- No AI
- Word or Google doc
- Double-spaced
- No Author Names on pages
- Title on first page
- If this is not an opening, please identify – middle of book, ending, inciting incident, etc.
- Up to 600 words
- Use content warnings, if applicable
The first session begins at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and the second, at 1 p.m. We will contact you via email with information regarding your expected session time. A warning: if you are near the end of the list, we might not get to all of the slush reads. Sign up early!

The Authors Workshop Track focuses on hands-on results
Notes aren’t the only thing you leave these workshops with. We want you to have critiques of your work, a new flash fiction, or the plot to your next novel in hand. JordanCon Guests are industry professionals with an amazing wealth of experience and knowledge. Here are some of the planned workshops we have in store for writers:
The Friday Night Writer’s Workshop
Two industry professional guests and up to four writing peers get together for two hours in critique pods to review 1000 words from each writer. We’ll have plenty of pods as our guests love this opportunity! Submit 1000 words according to the form’s guidelines and we’ll match you with the best group available. Submissions will be open until we fill up all the pods, or the week prior to the convention. Submission Form
Saturday Slush
The moderator reads 600 words anonymously for a panel of industry professionals who will give their feedback and reactions. Sit in the audience and soak up the responses to your work. This panel always fills up — so this year we’re doubling up with two sessions! Submissions will be open until we feel we’ve got plenty (and a waitlist) so check the guidelines on the form and submit early. Slush Submission Form
Pitch Panel
Bring a 30-60 second pitch for industry professionals. They’ll give you immediate feedback on what they liked, or where you lost them. Test out your pitch! This panel is first come / first serve. Raise your hand and go when you’re picked. No sign up required.
One-on-One Mentors (and possibly Pitches)
This is new for the Authors Workshop Track, but we talked with a number of the guests and we believe we can offer 15-minute sessions with industry professionals to talk about your writing, career, or anything related to the profession. Stay tuned for more news on this. Sign-up cannot start until we have the guest roster.
And More!
We know we’ll have the Flash Fiction class with Robby Hilliard but we’ve also discussed ideas with several other guests, so stay tuned to social media and the blogs to see what we come up with.

Friday Night Writer’s Workshop
Writers – this is your event! Industry professionals and your peers will read and critique 1000 word submissions.
You’ll get together in small groups with a couple guests and a few peers in a casual setting. This is an awesome chance to not only get feedback on a few pages, but give it as well.
Space is limited, so get your submission in early. Word documents only, double-spaced with default margins and readable font, so we can print them out for each critique pod. One submission per person. If you must revise and resubmit, it will change your place in the queue. Plan half an hour per reading so this will be a late Friday event which can last two hours or more. We’ll cutoff submissions when we reach capacity.
Scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Friday April 19, 2024 (results may vary so check the schedule when you arrive).

The Author’s Workshops Track is running with two old favorites for the writers at JordanCon!
First, the Friday Night Workshop is back!
Writers, we’ll take your 1000 word or less submissions starting in February, and then in April we’ll meet up at JordanCon and get together with some professionals in the industry and our peers for a critique of your work.
It’s casual and fun! You’ll meet people and get some views on some of your writing.
Watch for a post next month where we open up submissions for this!
Second, Saturday Slush again!
Have 600 words or less read anonymously while industry professional give immediate feedback on stage. Terrifying? Maybe. Useful – beyond measure!
We’ll open up with a limited number of available slots in February after another announcement.
But wait, there’s more!
We’re going to work on Elevator Pitches! Bring a pitch, hit the professionals with it, and they’ll let you know how effective you were. We’re aiming for Saturday for this event as well.
