Our third Art Show proved that we’re really only just starting to hit our stride. Larry Elmore was a gracious, generous and enjoyable guest. It was so much fun to hang out with him til the wee hours each night, to hear his stories, and – of course – gawk at his beautiful art up close and in person. The man really is a legend and one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. Many of us came away with wonderful memories and anecdotes of his presence at JordanCon. Amazing! And of course it doesn’t hurt that we raised even more money for the Mayo Clinic with our Art Show commission, proving once again that you can do the right thing AND have a great time.
Those of you who were there have probably already heard that we had even more attendees this year than in 2013. Remember, how last year was supposed to be the “big” year, with the long-awaited completion of The Wheel of Time? But this year most of you came back – and brought your friends. It’s a good thing we are moving to a bigger hotel next year. That means, of course, that we’ll have even more space in 2015 for dealers with cool merchandise and for art that’s going to knock your socks off.
Speaking of knocking your socks off, surely you’ve also heard who our Artist Guest of Honor is in 2015? Todd Lockwood. You remember the incredible ebook cover for "The Gathering Storm"? Yes, of course you do. So put that tax refund in a sock for next year (preferably one that wasn’t just knocked off) because you’re gonna want it when you see what’s going up in the JordanCon Art Show in 2015.
On the Writing Track side of the house, our Author Guest of Honor is Saladin Ahmed, who won the 2013 Locus Award for Best First Novel and was nominated for Hugo, Nebula, Crawford, Gemmell, AND British Fantasy awards for his novel, "Throne of the Crescent Moon". You may not know of him now, but you should certainly check out his ebook collection of tales, “Engraved on the Eye’ which is currently available for free on Kindle. Go ahead and grab that bargain while you can, as well as "Throne of the Crescent Moon," so you can be all caught up on your reading for JordanCon 7.
If you would also like to be a part of the JordanCon 7 Art Show, you will need to register a user account on this site (if you don't already have one). The Art Show registration form for JordanCon 2015 will go live sometime in late summer or early fall of 2014, so you have some time yet. Keep an eye on this page and also watch the JordanCon Facebook page for a launch announcement later in the year. As in previous years, we will be awarding a Judges' Choice award at the end of the show, as well as three People’s Choice awards selected by the attendees of JordanCon.
Speaking of awards, I'd be remiss if I neglected to announce our Art Show award winners for JordanCon 6:
Judges' Choice Award:
Sam Flegal for “Elf Gate”
People's Choice Award, Best Wheel of Time Art:
Ariel Burgess for “Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn”
People's Choice Award, Best Non-Wheel-of-Time Art:
Melissa Gay for “Medusa at Home”
People's Choice Award, Best 3D Art:
Paige Gardner for “Siri”
Congratulations to our JordanCon 6 Award Winners!
We’re adding a few new ideas to Art Show programming, which we’ll announce later, but we always welcome your ideas. Do contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have an idea for art-related programming at JordanCon 7 and we’ll see what we can do!
