About Deep South Con

JordanCon V (2013) was selected as the site of the 51st annual DeepSouthCon in September of 2011.

DeepSouthCon is the south's premier regional Science Fiction Convention, held every year in a different southern city. It sponsors the Phoenix and Rebel awards to honor southern fans and writers. JordanCon is a natural fit to host a DeepSouthCon. We have a strong focus on literature programming, are named in honor of one of the South's most famous fantasy writers and frequently feature local and regional authors as part of our programming. Additionally, this will be the first time DeepSouthCon will be in Georgia since 2000.

If our bid to host Deep South Con is successful, we will be organizing the annual Hearts tournament. This is traditionally a very social and casual event and a great way to meet new fans. We will also be responsible for adminstering the annual Phoenix and Rebel awards. The Phoenix is given to the professional (writer, editor or artist) who has done the most for southern fandom. The Rebel is awarded to the fan who has done the most for southern fandom. Some programming over the weekend will reflect the long and sometimes sordid history of Atlanta fandom, from "Confederation", the 1986 Atlanta WorldCon, to the rise of Dragon*Con and other fan gatherings big and small. We will also be responsible chairing the annual meeting of the Southern Fandom Confederacy and administering the site selection vote for Deep South Con 53. Expect to see lots of new faces and hear lots of new topics of conversation at DeepSouthCon.

If you'd like to check out a DeepSouthCon before it comes to JordanCon, the 50th anniversary " Lunar Party " is being June 15-17, 2012 in Huntsville, Alabama. This will be the first stand alone DeepSouthCon in a number of years, so you'll get the full flavor of what DSC is.
